Simultaneous interpreting
In simultaneous interpretation, speeches are translated into the target language “in (almost) real time”. Special SI equipment is required.
Whispered interpreting (chuchotage)
Chuchotage is the French term for ‘whispering’. This is a special form of simultaneous interpretation that is only suitable for certain situations (involving a maximum of two listeners).
Consecutive interpreting
In consecutive interpretation, the speaker pauses occasionally to allow longer passages of speech to be translated into the target language. This technique tends to involve the use of notes (interpreters are trained to use a special notation technique).
Ad-hoc or liaison interpreting
This type of interpreting is a special form of consecutive interpretation in which shorter passages are translated into another language.

What is the BDÜ?
The Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Űbersetzer e.V. [BDÜ]) is Germany’s largest association representing professional linguists. With more than 6,000 members, the BDÜ represents 75% of all professionally organized translators and interpreters in Germany.
Membership of the BDÜ is a sure mark of quality since all potential members have to present evidence of their professional qualifications before they can join the association. This offers an additional safeguard for clients commissioning linguistic services and enhances the professional standing of BDÜ members.
What is the VKD?
The Association of Conference Interpreters (VKD) is a division of the BDÜ, the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators.
Members of the association are multilingual communication specialists who ensure seamless communication across language and cultural barriers. To join the VKD, conference interpreters must undergo a rigorous admissions process, during which their skills and expertise are carefully examined. Junior members must provide evidence of their formal (university) training as interpreters, while experienced members must provide additional evidence of at least 200 assignment days as conference interpreters. The intent is to ensure quality for the client.
